Hiding From Love

1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment” (KJV).

“If I let someone love me, first he’ll cut off my hands, then my arms and finally my heart,” my friend said. “I’m afraid.” She associated love with pain. Past relationships had robbed her uniqueness, thwarted her personality and depleted her spirit. My friend camouflaged her deep love hunger by trying to be perfect. She felt driven to prove herself a worthwhile occupant on God’s earth. An “everything’s just fine” facade hid a terrified inner child. She was afraid her human inadequacies would cause people to reject and ridicule her. So she hid in fear, and the fear tainted her view of love. Dr. John Townsend, author of Hiding from Love, says, “We hide from what we need.”

One day my friend read: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; because fear has torment.” When she learned that the word, “perfect” in the passage means full-grown, or adult, and not sinless, she renewed her commitment to walk through her conditioned fear responses toward mature love. It is a process and my friend is still working on it. I respect her for that.

Lord, there’s no torment in your love.
Mentally I realize this,
but help me experience it
emotionally and spiritually as well.
