Doing My Part
1 Corinthians 7:7: “But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.”
Earlier this year the college my daughter attends asked her to sing, and me to accompany her on the piano, in the Parent’s Weekend final service. On the designated Sunday morning hundreds of visiting parents, students, and faculty filled the beautiful chapel. Glancing at the printed program, I noticed the special music included music majors and accomplished musicians. Doubts about our musical contribution pushed at the corners of my mind.
Prior to the service, all who were on the program met back stage to pray together. One student prayed, “Thanks, God, that we each have different talents, yet it all fits into the balance of the total program.” Hearing those words, I relaxed.
While walking back to our seat my daughter asked, “Did you hear what the pianist prayed?”
“Certainly did,” I replied.
“That’s it!” she whispered. “Even though I don’t have the same type voice as the senior music major, I can sing my song. And God will speak through both of us.” She smiled and squeezed my hand.
We each have different gifts, talents and sounds. God planned it that way. When we do our individual part, the variety of God’s creation shines through.
Lord, I look, sound and think differently than my peers. T
hat’s okay.
It adds variety to life.
