Being Versus Doing
John 6:28-29: “What are the things God wants us to do?” (v.28, NCV).
When people asked, “What are the things God wants us to do?” Jesus said, “The work God wants you to do is this: to believe in the One that God sent.”
You may be asking: “Lord, what do you want me to do?” This is a valid question, but some of us ask this to the exclusion of the more essential question, “Who or what do you want me to be?” Do! Perform! That is all many of us know. But Jesus says that God wants us to be; to be a believing person. Being is more basic than doing. After all, we are human beings, not human doings. Doing flows naturally out of being.
We do not have to “do” or “perform” to get God to love us. He just wants us to believe that He loves us. He wants us to believe that He sent Jesus to show us that love. Learning to be who we really are before God involves faith. We can learn to be first and then do.
Lord, today I will release
my obsessive need to perform
in order to win your favor.
I will be quiet enough
to acknowledge the growing faith within me.
